N.Y. Breaks Electric Consumption Records

New Yorkers coping with temperatures in the 90s and high humidity turned up their air conditioners Tuesday and broke records for electricity usage, the Consolidated Edison power company said.

By 4 p.m. customers in New York City and Westchester County to the north had hit an all-time peak, consuming 12,361 megawatts, enough electricity to simultaneously power 12.36 million homes.
