Bulgaria has the potential to become the main distributor of natural gas for the entire Southeast Europe and the Black Sea region, Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev said on Friday in his keynote address at an energy business forum in the frame of the energy summit “Natural Gas for Europe: Security and Partnership.”
According to the prime minister, the common energy policy of the European Union, the establishment of a uniform market and its enlargement to the Pan-European energy community offer a favorable environment for the Bulgarian energy strategies.
Stanishev laid much emphasis on the production of clean energy, the security of the supplies through diversification of the resources and the routes, the activity in the formation of a common European policy, the good partnership with traditional and new suppliers, and the strengthening of the Bulgarian position as a distributor of energy in Southeast Europe.
The prime minister also stressed Bulgaria’s strategic location between Asia, Russia and Europe, and pointed out that the country had learned its lessons from the January gas crisis and the related issue of the security of gas supplies.
