Mexico oil output to drop 290,000 bpd in 2009-EIA

WASHINGTON, March 18 (Reuters) – Mexico’s crude oil production is expected to average 2.9 million barrels per day this year, down 290,000 bpd from 2008, and then fall to 2.7 million bpd next year, the U.S. Energy Information Administration said on Wednesday.

“The decline is driven mainly by falling production at the super-giant Cantarell field, which has only been partially offset by higher production from other areas,” the EIA said in in its update on Mexico’s energy sector.

The Cantarell field produced over 1 million bpd last year, down 30 percent from 1.47 million bpd in 2007 and nearly half its peak production of 2.12 million bpd in 2004, according to the EIA.
