As I write this, I’m 35,000 feet above the southeastern United States in an Airbus A319, eating processed cheese (from Los Angeles), individually wrapped bread sticks (from New Orleans), individually wrapped cookies (made in Belgium but distributed from San Francisco), and individually wrapped hard candies (from Hanover, New Jersey).
James Howard Kunstler has a thing or two to say about the global production system that makes this miraculous (if cramped and slightly stale) flying experience possible.
