The International Energy Agency recently published its vision of a cleaner, less oil-dependent future. Dolf Gielen, one of the lead authors of the IEA Energy Technology Perspectives, explains how to reduce oil consumption and halve carbon dioxide emissions by 2050.
Why has the IEA issued this new report?
The current outlook is not sustainable, fossil fuels demand continues to rise very rapidly and CO2 emissions are going through the roof. So we developed scenarios where we asked if it is technologically feasible to stabilize or halve emissions, and what it would imply for energy policies.
What did you look at exactly?
We covered energy supply and demand. What is, of course, very important for emissions is power generation and synthetic fuels
