US and China to announce energy – environment deal at economic talks next week

WASHINGTON (Thomson Financial) – The US and China will announce an agreement on energy and the environment at their Strategic Economic Dialogue (SED) meeting next week, a senior Treasury official said today.

Ambassador Alan Holmer, the Treasury’s special envoy for China, told reporters the agreement would cover clean air, clean water, clean and efficient production and transmission of electricity, and transportation, but he did not give details.

Holmer said the US and China had ‘tremendous commonality of interest’ as the number one and number two consumers of oil and that the US delegation wanted to emphasize ‘the extent to which free market forces can help countries address energy security.’
