Poland reiterates opposition to planned Nord Stream gas pipeline project

The Polish government continues to oppose the planned Nord Stream gas pipeline, also saying that it is against any attempts to co-finance the project using funds from the European Investment Bank, of which Poland is a shareholder, Deputy Economy Minister Marcin Korolec told the Sejm, the lower house of Parliament, on Thursday.

“The government of Poland sees a contradiction of Polish interests and a violation of the European solidarity principle in any attempts to support the Nord Stream gas pipeline construction project by the European Investment Bank and other financial institutions in which Poland holds shares, either directly or indirectly,” Korolec said.
Poland is against the planned Nord Stream pipeline, which will directly link Russia and Germany and which will also circumvent the Poland. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said in an exclusive interview with Interfax in February that Poland will not join the Nord Stream pipeline project because the cost would be several times higher than that of a land alternative.
