Wars, metals shortage driving up price of ammunition
EDMONTON – The price of ammo is shooting up faster than a speeding bullet.
Metal supplies are diminishing due to industrialization in China. On top of that, ammunition supplies have been depleted by wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and by consumers who hoard what they can for fear of higher prices.
Prices are also skyrocketing because fuel prices have meant a doubling of shipping costs in three years.
P&D Enterprises supplies ammunition for hunters, hobbyists as well as the Edmonton police department. Phil Harnois, an owner of P&D, said business has been affected.
“We not only have a problem with the price, we have a problem with availability as well.”
Shipping costs are going through the roof, Harnois said.
“If it’s a bunch of down quilts, it’s going to be shipped a lot cheaper than a bunch of ammunition just because of the weight.”
