Nigeria: Lagos Consumers Revolt, Send Back Electricity Bills

A revolt of some sort in Lagos and other parts of the country among a section of power consumers may have commenced with their refusal to pay electricity bills of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) owing to the abysmal level of power generation, supply and distribution nationwide.

Vanguard checks revealed that these consumers couldn’t be bothered if they are disconnected from the national grid because the power supply from that source has become back up rather than the main, undermining their businesses.
The nation’s power utility company, the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), has also not minced words as it uses the opportunity at different fora to appeal to power consumers across the country to ensure payment of electricity bills as a refusal will grievously affect its operations.

In Lagos, the state that drives the economy of the country, power supply is presently at an embarassingly low level forcing prices of businesses and commodities to go higher than necessary thereby taking its ugly toll on the economy, and for this reason many residents and businesses are threatening to discontinue the payment of electricity bills which according to them is fast becoming similar to fraud.
