For the past three weeks, the average power supply to all parts of the country has dropped to less than five hours a day. Power supply from the Egbin Thermal Station with the capacity for 1,350 megawatts is reported to have dropped to less than 800 MW due to a combination of inadequate gas supply and ill-maintenance.
The nation’s total generation capacity is now put at less than 2,000 MW, as the other power plants are just lumbering along due to age and poor maintenance.
In many organisations, the cost of fuel and maintenance of over-worked power generators have pushed production cost beyond tolerable limits. Total darkness has descended on the land, creating opportunity for bandits to operate. The consequences on inflation and employment generation are dreadful.
