Kampala, Uganda – Post-election violence in Kenya sparked an energy crisis in neighbouring Uganda Tuesday as unrest, rioting and ethnic violence have halted oil exports to surrounding countries that depend on Kenya’s Indian Ocean port for petrol. Petrol prices have quadrupled and there are virtually no vehicles on the roads as dry gas stations turn away motorists.
The government said it had prepared itself for the possibility and stored petrol reserves ahead of the poll.
“We had to make sure we had oil going for a week after the election. If the violence continues for the next week, it will be a crisis but it is not a crisis yet. We have enough resources to keep us for a week,” said Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Henry Okello Oryem.
