DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Supreme Court issued a divided ruling Friday on how utility companies may buy and sell electricity from individual wind generator owners.
The ruling says the utilities may charge more for the electricity they’re selling to those individuals than it pays them for the excess power their wind generators may create.
The ruling came in a case in which a central Iowa couple filed a lawsuit against Jefferson-based Midland Power Cooperative.
Gregory and Beverly Swecker, of Dana, built a wind generator to save money on their utility costs in the hopes of selling excess power back to the electric cooperative.
Midland, however, charged more for the electricity sold to the Sweckers than the company would pay them for the electricity their wind turbine generated.
