Japan: No lunch? Blame the oil price

Soaring oil prices are making an impact in an unlikely place – in school lunches in Japan.

A school in Yokohama near Tokyo has cited the spike in oil costs as a reason to cancel lunches for two days in early January, a report and an official said.
Ekoda Elementary School had allotted 40 000 yen (around R2 400) a year per student for lunches, with parents also contributing to pay for meals, and was going over budget, an education board official said.

She declined to give further details on the lunch costs, but Kyodo News said the school had explained to parents that the record oil prices were driving up the costs of food.
