The European Union’s energy chief pleaded for unity on Wednesday over the bloc’s goals to increase renewable energy production and said there would be no going back on an ambitious target already agreed by EU leaders.
The EU agreed in March to get 20 percent of its energy from wind, solar and other renewable sources by 2020, but the executive European Commission has met resistance as it attempts to divide the target among the bloc’s 27 member nations.
Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs said on Wednesday the goal would not be changed.
“There is no way to change (the) binding 20 percent target. It was agreed by heads of state and government,” he told a news conference.
“The Commission will defend this decision because it was the right decision,” he said. “No scaling down.”
