I was browsing the net, and came across the seminal article by M. King Hubbert Nuclear Energy and the Fossil Fuels.
Now looking at the document, I find it incredible that
a) People look upon Hubbert as a doomsayer, and
b) they totally ignore the solution that he posits for the problem of peak.
That solution is namely breeder reactors using U-238 rather than the LWR reactors using U-235. I also find it incredible that many otherwise pragmatic people discard nuclear energy altogether, when the situation is so dire and it is likely the only replacement that could be ramped up in time to make a real difference without catastrophic environmental effects, and perhaps combined with techniques like thermal depolymerization to make oil a resource we could produce, rather than just consume.
Anyways, maybe I’m just venting, but Hubbert makes an impressive case. TDP combined with cogenerating, passively safe breeder reactors is potentially is the Haber Boesch process of the 21st century, and it seems like everyone is ignoring it (well everyone except lawrence livermore whose funding should be upped ten times over.).
