WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. gasoline supplies fell last week for the fifth-straight week despite a jump in production and imports, the government said Thursday.
Stockpiles of the motor fuel fell by 1.5 million barrels, or 0.8 percent, to 191.1 million barrels for the week ending Aug. 31, the Energy Department’s Energy Information Administration said in its weekly report. Gasoline inventories were 8.8 percent below year-ago levels.
U.S. refineries boosted their production, running at 92.1 percent of their total production capacity on average, up 1.8 percentage points from the previous week. Crude oil inventories fell by 3.9 million barrels to 329.7 million barrels.
The report also showed that stocks of distillate fuel, which include diesel and heating oil, rose by 2.3 million barrels to 132.2 million barrels.
For the week ended Aug. 31, imports of gasoline averaged more than 1.3 million barrels per day, an increase of 321,000 barrels per day from a week earlier.
