LONDON (AFP) – Environmental protesters on Sunday began setting up camp near London’s main Heathrow airport ahead of planned protests to highlight what they say is the aviation industry’s role in global warming.
The event, which organisers are calling the Camp for Climate Change, is due to get under way on Tuesday and finish next Sunday.
Thousands of people from across Britain and Europe are expected to join the camp, which has been set up between two villages close to the sprawling airport site west of the capital and on the route of a proposed third runway.
The British Airports Authority (BAA) that runs Heathrow last week was granted an injunction banning one group of activists from taking disruptive action, but peaceful protesters were allowed to demonstrate.
The event is billed by organisers as a chance for “low-impact living, debates, learning skills and high-impact direction tackling the root causes of climate change”.
