The debate over the viability of biofuels as alternative energy sources continues. The news that the Indian Oil Corporation is planning to produce biodiesel appears at first to be a good way to move towards energy security.
However, the more popular biofuels become, the more apparent it is that they are not, in fact, the green alternative to petroleum that we are looking for.
Recent reports suggest that the most widely used biofuel, ethanol, could in fact damage our cars. Water seepage at petrol pumps might result in a water-ethanol mixture. Dealers are unwilling to pump out the mixture since that would result in losses for them.
This, of course, means that an unscrupulous dealer could quite easily use the water-ethanol mixture with petrol thus damaging engines.
This, however, is not the biggest concern with using ethanol or indeed any biofuel as an energy source.
