Nigeria: Fuel Scarcity Hits North

Scarcity of petrol has hit northern parts of the country, as speculation emerged of an impending fuel price hike by the authorities.

The situation has got worse since it began last week as more filling stations in most part of the northern states ran out of supplies.

There were speculations that some marketers have resorted to hoarding the products after they allegedly got information that the federal government was planning to jerk up the pump price of petrol.

Dr Oluwole Oluleye, the Executive Secretary of the Petroleum Products Pricing and Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) said yesterday that the scarcity in Abuja occurred because FCT’s fuel reserve depot in Suleja, was over stretched and exhausted so fuel could not be lifted at the weekend. He denied any plan to hike price but did not explain the scarcity in the north.
