Sikorsky Aircraft and its United Technology Corp.’s sister companies are preparing to cut the cord that links them to the region’s power grid.
Sikorsky submitted plans Tuesday to the state Department of Public Utility Control for a $13.6 million project to build a 7.5-megawatt power plant to meet its needs. Other UTC divisions with applications on file are Pratt & Whitney and Hamilton Sundstrand. Pratt already installed a 31-megawatt generator and is running it, so the company is looking for reimbursement. Combined these three UTC companies would take more than 48 megawatts of electricity off the grid.
Paul Jackson, a Sikorsky spokesman, said the helicopter maker is primarily concerned about the cost of electricity and reducing pollution. He and UTC spokesperson Judy DiScipio said the corporation is using combined cycle systems, which recycle the heat from gas-fired generators to create more power.
Jackson noted Sikorsky’s application is in the early stages and could still be considered an exploration by the company of its energy options.
