Palm oil it is for S. Korea’s Enertec

South Korean biodiesel producer Enertec Co Ltd said it will continue with its plans to use palm oil as feedstock for its biodiesel plant despite its Government’s encouragement for farmers to produce more rapeseed for use in biodiesel production.

“We find palm biodiesel the only green fuel that can really be considered sustainable. It is important for biodiesel vendors like us to secure adequate and regular feedstock supply, and palm being cheaper than rapeseed makes more business sense,” Enertec managing director Mckin Lee Jin told Business Times at the Palm Oil Conference 2007 held in Kuala Lumpur recently.

Since July 1 2006, South Korea mandated that up to five per cent of each diesel tank must be of renewable sources. Mckin Lee said the current usage level is only 0.5 per cent and that poses great potential for biodiesel sales in South Korea.

“Since our government made it compulsory to blend biodiesel with petroleum diesel, there are now 10 biodiesel vendors,” he said.
