Hydrocarbons — crude oil and natural gas — account for around 38% of the primary energy consumption in India. So far, crude oil has accounted for the lion’s share of this total. However, in coming years, the share of natural gas in India’s energy pie is likely to shoot up.
Transportation fuels — diesel, petrol and aviation turbine fuel — account for the bulk of India’s crude oil consumption. India’s consumption of these three products added up to 52 million tonnes in FY06, which was about 47% of the total crude oil consumption. Total automobile sales for the past four years have been growing at double-digit figures, adding up to 8.9 million in ’05-06. The total number of vehicles in India was 67 million in ’02-03, while sales in the three subsequent years add up to 24 million vehicles.
