Walking on oil – Alberta’s oil sands

C21ETV of Calgary, Canada, releases a one-hour made for Television documentary, entitled “Walking on oil – Alberta’s oil sands”. The first public screening of the program will be held on January 18, 2005 at Shell Centre, 400 – 4th Ave., S.W., Room SC-447, in Calgary, AB., Canada, from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M.
1. THE PROGRAM

“Walking on oil – Alberta’s oil sands” is a narrative driven Television essay that melds natural history, spectacular scenery, and technological and scientific explanations to tell a timely story. It features 10 energy companies: Syncrude, Suncor, Shell, Western, Chevron, Albian Sands, Terasen Pipelines, EnCana, Imperial Oil (Esso), and Petro-Canada. These are all involved in oil sands projects in Alberta, and have never been featured together in a Television program. Alberta’s landscape forms the backdrop of the program. The scenery scenes assure that international viewers can locate Alberta geographically, and can see what Alberta looks like.

2. WHY “Walking on oil – Alberta’s oil sands”?

The “why” is the timely telling of an interesting story about petroleum, that comes in a time of worldwide debate about oil sufficiency. Throughout its history, there has been conjecture about the imminent demise of the oil industry. “Walking on oil – Alberta’s oil sands” puts predictions that the World is “running out of oil”, into better perspective, particularly as the situation is seen in North America, where sources other than conventional oil are considered, such as Alberta’s oil sands.

Do Alberta’s oil sands support the theory that the World is “running into oil”, not “out of oil”? They seem to. Various experts claim that Alberta’s oil sands contain more petroleum than Saudi Arabia’s oil fields. They explain that there is enough Bitumen (a tar-like component) in Alberta’s oil sands to pave a four-lane superhighway to the moon – 250,000 miles, or 400,000 km, with ample to spare for exit ramps. Alberta’s oil sand deposits contain resources to supply Canada’s energy needs for more than 475 years, or total world energy needs for up to 15 years. This gives grounds for optimism – the reversal of long term and widespread belief that “the world is running out of oil”.

Alberta’s oil sands are a major energy source for Canada and the USA, and a significant part of the energy equation for the world. Public awakening of their potential is occurring. “Walking on oil – Alberta’s oil sands” aids the occurrence of that awakening, as the program provides a comprehensive, visually explained understandable depiction of the potential of Alberta’s oil sands.
