Power Outages to Follow if Drought Continues

The extreme temperatures being experienced world-wide this summer are also being felt in Turkey.

Water supplies at certain rain-fed reserves in Turkey are rapidly drying up because of continuing high temperatures, increasing the demand for water.

Authorities point out this is a particularly dangerous situation because Turkey’s electricity needs are met mostly by hydroelectric stations; they warn power outages may occur if the current situation continues.
Wishing to avoid a country-wide electricity shortage from such cuts by auto-producers, ministry officials are focusing on natural gas stations as a possible solution.

Relying on natural gas, a simple but high priced alternative, may help meet the needs of Turkey’s electricity consumption.

The ministry may again resort to natural gas power stations to counteract the issue of water shortages, energy market authorities state.

This situation will cause a continuous increase in the demand for imported gas.

Meanwhile, energy production in August also rose in parallel with the increase in electricity consumption.
