JHALAKATI, Aug 2 (UNB): Angry demonstrators deprived of regular electricity supply ransacked the power office in the town during their three-hour demonstration programme Wednesday, leaving an engineer and five police injured.
Witnesses said residents of the town, under the banner of Jhalakati Power Crisis Prevention Committee, brought out a protest procession from Jhalakati chamber office at 10:00 am.
The procession terminated at the Collectorate Bhaban after parading the main thoroughfares. They also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner.
Hundreds of people then staged demonstration in front of the local power office at New College road and burned an effigy of the resident engineer.
The unruly people also stormed the power office defying police barricade, damaged the office and the sub-station. They also assaulted resident engineer Imdadul Huq, who was admitted to Sadar Hospital with injuries.
