Mountain glaciers are melting at a fast rate

Ice on Earth’s mountain glaciers is melting at a fastest rate in 5,000 years as a result of an unprecedented period of global warming, according to scientists who have studied ice cores taken from mountains ranging from Andes in South America to Himalayas in Asia and found that climate change is leading to destruction of the tropical glaciers.

The warming around Earth’s tropical belt suggests that the climate system has exceeded a critical threshold, they believe, which has sent the tropical zone glaciers in full retreat. They will melt completely “in the near future”, the scientists warn.
