The UN Clean Development Mechanism started sponsoring alternative energy projects in 2004 and currently has 200 working systems with 600 more in the planning stages. Ranging from wind farms to solar PV to alternative bio fuels, the goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while concurently providng needed energy around the world. The success of the project so far is now quantifiable at least as regards the emissions avoided, according to their press release (small PDF), one billion tons eliminated by 2012.
