Gas prices siphon profits from tourist attractions

For many businesses, soaring fuel prices are threatening to take the fun out of summer.

From helicopter rides to traveling fairs, businesses that cater to vacationers and that depend on fuel to power their operations are being stung by rising costs that they either are absorbing or passing along.

“It’s having a big impact,” says Dan Gavinski, general manager of Original Wisconsin Ducks, an amphibious-vehicle-tour operation in the Wisconsin Dells. “We had somewhat anticipated (higher fuel costs) last November when we set our prices this year. But obviously it’s not quite covering the prices we’re seeing now.”

Last month, cruise operator Carnival said higher fuel costs are siphoning from its bottom line. Fuel will cost $265 million more this year than last year, it said.
