Philly Students Build Biodiesel Hybrid Supercar

May 9, 2006 – A super car built by Philadelphia high school students is on its way to defend its title in a national competition. A ride in the Hybrid Attack is one to remember. The bio-diesel car can go up to 150 miles per hour. But the kit car’s claim to fame is not in how fast it gets from point A to B, but rather how efficiently it does. And it’s creators at West Philadelphia High school are barely old enough to drive.

Simon Hauger/West Philadelphia High Automotive Teacher: “Students at the Automobile Academy have created the 1st hybrid super car. They’ve used hybrid technology in a new way to make cars that are fast and fuel efficient.” Students spent two years custom building the hybrid hot rod that runs on soy bean oil. “This is the fuel filter that filters the soy bean oil.”

The ultra light carbon fiber car accelerates from zero to 60 in 4 seconds. And gets about 60 miles to the gallon.
