CANADA – I attended the screening of the thought-provoking film “The End of Suburbia” at the Isabelle Reader Theatre on Wednesday May 3.
The film explores the effects we may expect as the supply of readily available oil and natural gas is depleted.
The interviews with authorities Matthew Simmons, CEO of Simmons and Co. the world’s largest Energy investment Bank, Colin Campbell, Convener and Editor of the Association for the Study of Peak Oil and trustee for the Petroleum Institute of London, and others tell us we have now reached the peak of world possible oil production.
Oil will not just stop, production will slowly decrease as price rises continually faster. The claim is that “suburban lifestyle” will be affected dramatically.
Living out in the suburbs means driving almost everywhere, to work, shopping, even schools.
Here in Langford, the majority of residents work in Victoria and other areas, to which most of them drive. We have encouraged the “Big Box Stores” to locate here, to which almost everyone drives – after all, how do you carry all that stuff home but in a vehicle?
