Here’s a small roundup of some high efficiency cars that have been making the news lately:
First, a new generation Toyota Prius could hit 113mpg by 2008 because Toyota plans to ditch the NiMH batteries in favor for higher energy density, higher power density Li-ion batteries. Toyota is doing this because they are having a tough time competing with small diesel cars in Europe, many of which are nearly as efficient and also cheaper. Or, you could have a 100+mpg Prius today by converting it into a plug-in. Kits to do this are in the works and will hopefully be available soon.
Next is a company called Hybrid Technologies. They’re planning to sell a Li-ion pure electric vehicle. A 5hr charge would be enough for a 300 mile trip and the car would cost about $35,000.
