This week’s pain at the gas pumps is only a foretaste of what could lie ahead. Without major changes in how we use energy and the kinds of energy we use, we face an economic crisis, a geopolitical crisis and an environmental crisis.
..To give a hint, look at the forecasts of automobile use by Goldman Sachs, the Wall Street investment-banking firm. Its economists estimate the United States would have 196 million vehicles in 2030, compared to 150 million now. But the number of vehicles in Brazil, Russia, India and China could reach almost 560 million by 2030, compared to 83 million now.
So where would the oil come from to fuel these dramatic changes in the global economy?
