Pain and gain at the gas pump

With roughly a teaspoon of precious fuel left in the tank, I stopped at the gas station in Kickapoo, even though the sign said $2.59 a gallon.

The little car has a little tank, but it takes bigger bucks to fill it every day. This week’s cash stash flicked down with every click the gas monitor went up. It gives a whole new meaning to the term mad money.

“Why the price hike this time?” I grouse.

“They don’t even give us a reason any more,” the well-worn fellow behind the counter says of the corporate office. “They just raise it.”

“Easy for them,” I say. “They’re making billions. You guys get all the grief.”
