The tragedy is that we as a nation have no plan to solve the exploding problems – the ever-growing thirst for oil and our dependence on oil from the Persian Gulf.
There is an answer, but it would require facing down big oil – which for all practical purposes is calling the shots in Bush’s foreign policy.
The obvious answer is far tighter fuel efficiency standards for automobiles and trucks, the development of alternative fuels and – probably – substantially higher gas taxes to try to drive down our addictive consumption.
