In building democratic society in Iraq, liberalisation and privatisation of natural resource, in particular oil, must not be overlooked.
Oil is the most influential resource when it comes to the Middle East.
There was once a time when superstitious expectant mothers visited oilfields in Kirkuk and said in Kurdish, “Babgurgur begur hatim bo kiur hatim”, which translated means “Babagurgur, I visit you to have a son.” Of course, in a society run by men, having a son has its advantages. I wonder, though, if any of these women knew that the oilfields would one day fuel the wars that would take away the sons it had supposedly given them.
