Coal plant plan scrapped over emissions fears

A private sector plan to build a large-scale coal thermal power plant in Ube, Yamaguchi Prefecture, has been scrapped because of concern that it would produce too much carbon dioxide.

..

The plant was to be capable of generating 1 million kilowatts of electricity, and its annual emission of CO2 was projected to exceed that of a plant using natural gas by 3 million tons–an amount equal to annual CO2 emissions from 540,000 households.

The Environment Ministry, which assessed the potential environmental effect of the plant, in mid-February requested that the enterprise come up with measures to substantially reduce the plant’s CO2 emissions.
