CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa Rising petroleum prices are turning hog manure into the brown gold of agriculture.
According to The Cedar Rapids Gazette, farmers who concentrated on growing corn and soybeans for years are suddenly interested in livestock again.
Experts say hog manure, which has increased 50 percent in value during the past two years, is a key component in the expansion of Iowa’s hog industry.
Greg Brenneman is an Iowa State University ag engineering specialist. He says two or three years ago, one-thousand gallons of hog manure was worth about 20 dollars. Now, it’s around 30 dollars.
