Hot stuff

With today’s high cost of natural gas, hot air whooshing out of registers sounds like money floating away. It’s scary enough that some are looking to other sources to heat the house.

Wood has been used for a long time, and pellets manufactured from wood are becoming more widely used. So is corn – it’s not just for the dinner table any more.

Indoor, vented stoves that burn pellets or corn can heat a decent-sized house and the cost of stoking them often is less than what gas would cost. Terry Gilliland, manager of Tractor Supply Co. in Owosso, said stoves are manufactured for a specific fuel.

“You should burn pellets in pellet stoves, corn in corn stoves,” he said. “You can burn some corn in a pellet stove, but no more than 25 percent.” He added that only wood should be burned in a wood stove.
